JOIN our FIRST Lego League Team!
Interested in starting your own team? Contact us, we can help!
Who we are:
We are a community team based in Pleasant Grove and meet in our coach’s house.
Our team started in FIRST Lego League in 2011 and in FIRST Tech challenge in 2014. For the past 4 years we have only competed in FIRST Tech challenge but are restarting an FLL team for the 2025-26 season.
What is FIRST Lego League (FLL):
FLL is an engineering competition for kids in grade 4 to 8. “Students engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering - building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. They also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem. They work as a team and follow the FIRST Core values of gracious professionalism and coopertition.“
Each year in early August FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) releases a new challenge
Teams plan, design, build and program a LEGO robot to solve as many missions as possible during a 2 and ½ minutes autonomous robot run.
See an example of mission run from our original team:: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_E_a4_9YKI
Teams will use a Scratch base programming for their robot (may use Python the second year).
Teams also research the year’s theme, identify a problem, and develop and share their solutions.
Teams will prepare presentations to showcase their project and robot design to judges.
During a tournament, teams will participate in 3 robot games and will have a 30-minutes judging session where they will showcase their project and robot design to judges as well as talk about core values and teamwork.
FLL Core Values:
Discovery: Explore new ideas and skills
Innovation: Use creativity and persistence to solve problems
Impact: Apply what you learn to improve the world
Inclusion: Respect others and embrace differences
Teamwork: Work together to be stronger
Fun: Enjoy and celebrate what you do
What FLL is Not:
This is not a “Lego club”, there is very little actual Lego building apart from putting together the mission models at the beginning of the season.
WHO we are looking for:
Up to 8 boys and girls entering grade 6 or 7 in Fall 2025.
No previous knowledge is necessary, you just need to be willing to learn, follow instructions, research topics, and try your best.
Willingness and ability to work as a team and have fun.
Important: We need a parent to help coach the project part of the team (The team will not start without this)
What to Expect:
Our team is competitive, robotics needs to be your #1 extra-curricular activity. The long-term goal of this team is to prepare kids to join our FIRST Tech Challenge team when they are in 8th or 9th grade.
We can accommodate a Fall sport but Spring is much harder to handle since this is when most tournaments are.
If your child is involved in theater, plays in January/February will be an issue.
Meetings:
Team members are required to attend all scheduled meetings outside of school breaks (Fall break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas break).
Excessive absences will result in dismissal from the team.
August to December:
2 90-minutes meetings per week 5 to 6:30pm (days to be determined with the team members)
Saturday morning: FLL table will be available for kids to work on robot missions from 9 to noon (optional)
Team members will have homework to do at home:
Research for the project
Work on presentation or posterboard for tournament
Presentation memorization
January and February:
Expect an additional weekly meeting especially the week before tournaments.
MLK day and President’s day: additional meetings will be scheduled on those days as they usually fall right before tournaments.
Team members are required to attend tournaments:
1 local scrimmage in December
1 local qualifier in January,
State tournament (if qualified). Location to be determined.
Team members will also be required to attend a local FTC tournament (either in Sandy or Provo).
Team members will attend some outreach events with the FTC team.
Off-Season:
This is a year-round team, we still meet from March to July.
Meetings may be weekly or every other week depending on the team's wishes (after a break after the end of the season).
The off-season is used to learn new skills, participate in outreach events
Behavior:
Team members are expected to be respectful of their coaches, teammates, other teams and volunteers
They are expected to work as a team, be willing to listen, and accept others’ ideas.
Accept the group decision even if someone else's idea is chosen
Provide and accept constructive criticism
Be willing to learn new skills
Participate in all parts of FLL: project, robot building, and programming, team building activities…
Be focused and on task during meetings (phones need to stay in bags during meetings)
Share resources with other members of the team
Be willing to ask for help
Be on time to meetings
Repeated behavior issues will result in dismissal from the team.
Finances:
$200 to cover team registration, tournament registration, team shirts, challenge set, supplies for project (If cost is an issue, let us know). Cost may be reduced if we can obtain grants.
This goes directly to the team budget, coaches do not profit from the club.
If the team qualifies they may attend an out-of-state tournament (there are only 2-3 teams that qualify from Utah every year so this is unlikely, especially the first year). Parents will be responsible for their team member’s traveling cost after any fundraising the team may do.
Communications:
Team members are expected to communicate absences in advance to coaches
Information for tournaments is sent through emails to team members and parents
Parents will be added to a group text for quick communication such as last-minute changes or reminders (team members can be added too if desired)
Parents involvement:
We need a parent to help coach the project part of the team (Team will not start without this)
We welcome parents' involvement with the team, you do not need to be technical to help.
As much as possible coaches and mentors will provide transportation to local tournaments and other events, however parents may occasionally be asked to help drive.
Parents are responsible for transportation to the State Tournament
kids love to eat :-) We love it when parents refill the snack supply in the robotics room.
Parents are welcome to attend meetings at any time
Parents will be invited on Friday evening before the tournament to watch the robot missions and judging presentations.

A meeting will be help mid/end of April with all the interested kids and parents.
